Take the scenic drive down Miami’s infamous Old Cutler Road, and you’ll find yourself mesmerized by the gorgeous architecture and even more enchanting trees that line the neighborhoods.
Drive far enough, and you’ll soon find yourself in the heart of Palmetto Bay, where a simple turn down the road can lead you into one of the city’s most important historic sites. Just on the edge of Biscayne Bay is the Deering Estate at Cutler.
This breathtaking property, once the winter home of American businessman and philanthropist Charles Deering, is managed today by Miami-Dade County Parks. And it’s an important archaeological and environmental preserve.
More than that, the Deering Estate is one of the very best places to visit alone or with family, thanks to their extensive, year-round programming and cultural events.

On any given day, a trip to the 444-acre site offers not only some of the most scenic vistas in the “Magic City,” but also daily tours of the historic houses (the 1922 Stone House, the Richmond Cottage and the 19th-century Richmond Hall) and the natural areas, including the chance to view rare and native orchids, ferns and trees.
History buffs and archaeology lovers will also enjoy hearing about the many discoveries that have been made on the land –including fossils that date back as far as 50,000 years – and other remains that suggest Paleo-Indians lived on the land over 10,000 years ago.
Anyone especially intrigued by this might want to check Deering’s calendar for monthly lectures presented by the volunteer-run Archaeological Society of Southern Florida.
Foodies won’t want to miss the culinary events that happen at various times of the year at Deering Estate, like their annual Mother’s Day Brunch, Wine on Harvest Moon and the Deering Seafood Festival.
Music-lovers will love attending performances by the Deering Estate Chamber Ensemble and the South Florida Chapter of the American Liszt Society, not to mention the Summer Cabaret Series, all happening inside the Stone House.

Those on a budget will be happy to know that Deering Estate also offers Fee-Free P.L.A.Y. Days throughout the year to bring the entire family without breaking the bank. These special events often feature extras not offered on regular days, including a visit from the MDPLS Book Mobile, free mini-canoe tours, tropical fruit displays and maybe even free yoga inside one of the houses.
The holiday season is especially magical at Deering, featuring everything from a magical Tree Lighting Ceremony to the Greater Miami Youth Symphony Holiday Concert, as well as Story Time with Santa. Plus, all December long, Deering Estate is transformed into a wonderful Holiday Wonderland, full of beautiful decorations and lights.
Check out the estate’s online calendar to stay abreast on upcoming, recurring events like their Bay Cruises, the One-Minute Play Festival (for mature audiences), Archaeology Day, the Deering Goes to the Birds bird-watching event, the Festival of the Arts and more.
If you’re somehow still not convinced that there’s something for you to do at Deering, we suggest you simply visit and see for yourself. Admission is just $12 for adults; $7 for kids ages four to 14; and free for littles ones and members of the Deering Estate Foundation.
